Mango Homeschool Edition Review {foreign lanuage curriculum}

Mango Languages Review

I was recently given a subscription to Mango Homeschool Edition to review. I first saw Mango at a homeschool convention last year. I was super interested in getting the program but couldn’t convince the hubby. When I saw that Mango was on our list of potential reviews this year, I was ecstatic!! A foreign language curriculum has been lacking in our homeschool and Mango was the perfect answer.

My fifth grader and freshman both worked on learning Brazilian Portuguese. My husband is from Brazil so we thought this would be a great opportunity to learn some of his language and be able to jump into conversations with his side of the family. Both of the kids worked on the Mango website four or five times a week. I was surprised at how quickly they picked it up. They walk around the house holding simple conversations and asking each other questions in Portuguese. That of course meant that Momma had to sit down and take a few lessons so I could understand what they were saying!

We were given three accounts on Mango, one for each of the kids and one for myself as the teacher. Needless to say the kids used it way more often than I did. I did monitor their progress by making sure they were logging in daily but I would like to have had a better way of tracking their progress. I am happy to say that my family is using the Beta edition of the Homeschool program and that a better tracking/monitoring system is on its way!

Mango Languages Review

Mango has been around for about 7 years now. They started in libraries and businesses but have moved into the homeschool world. (Yay!) Mango Homeschool Edition offers over 60 different languages to choose from. While we initially picked Portuguese, we could switch to Spanish, Latin, Italian or any of the others! As a member of Mango, you have access to all the languages with all the different supporting material for each language!

These features are currently available on the site:
Over 60 different languages
Progress Assessments

Built-in journals, discussions and wikis
Collaborative learning spaces
eNote messaging
/chat rooms
Access to embedded/downloadable content
Calendars to schedule meetings or study groups

Over the next several months, these exciting features will be available:
Enhanced Tracking and Progress Monitoring – including seat time (for students and parents)
Goals and Personal Lesson Plans (both stand-alone and tied into Mango courses)
Resume and Portfolio Builder

I have to admit that when I saw the pricing for the Homeschool Edition, I was quite surprised. I honestly thought it would be more expensive, but it’s not- especially when you join up with another family or two!

1 subscription is $18/month or $125/year total
2 subscriptions is $28/month or $175 /year total
3 subscriptions is $38/month or $225/year total
4 subscriptions is $48/month or $275/year total
5 subscriptions is $58/month or $325/year total

Anything over 6 subscriptions is a special group rate that will depend on the number in the group.

As a mother of a high schooler, I’m glad there are affordable programs out there like Mango Homeschool Edition that offer quality alternatives to other more expensive foreign language curriculum out there. This will definitely be a mainstay in our homeschool for years to come.
