The Ultimate Homeschool Planner Review

I’ve been homeschooling for six years now and believe me when I say that I’ve tried dozens of different planners. Planners for schoolwork, planners for housework, planners for family outings, planners for meals and on and on and on. Some planners combine a few areas of life but nothing combined them all.

For the past couple of months, we have been using Homeschool Planet from the Homeschool Buyers Co-op. After watching the video, I signed up for the free trial  and immediately got started filling in the calendar with lesson plans, family happenings, chores and more. The more I plugged in, the more I learned, and the more blown away I was by the flexibility of Homeschool Planet. It truly is the Ultimate Homeschool Planner.

The Ultimate Homeschool Planner Review

Being a Charlotte Mason-esque homeschool, I write a lot of my own lesson plans and they are largely composed of reading. Having to figure out how many pages each child needs to read a day in order to be done by a certain date has always been my least favorite part of planning. I am overjoyed to say that Homeschool Planet does that for me! AND it is COMPLETELY customizable!!

I’m going to walk you through setting up a lesson plan for one student. Because we are nearing the end of this school year, I will be setting up Julia’s 7th grade year. I used Ambleside Online for many her subjects. Because she has already completed much of year 6, she’s doing a mix of year 6 and year 7.

Step 1

Decide when your school year will begin, end, and any breaks you are planning on taking throughout the year.

Step 2

Add your subjects-  yes, I know that looks like a lot for one gal but these will be worked on during different terms (12 week periods). I found that adding them all at once saves time in the long run.

Step 3

Edit your family and add classes

This is where the planner gets ridiculously wonderful. Once you choose a subject, you have the capability to customize the class. How often? How many lessons? Need to track grades? Need to track hours? Need to add specific details to some days?

Because I’m adding Algebra, I go with the bottom option and plug in how many lessons she has.

Just hit next and everything is scheduled for you! I love it!

What about all those books I was talking about? I just plug in the number of pages and when I want it completed and BAM! DONE!

Do you have any idea how many hours I spent trying to figure out twenty something books for each kid??? Homeschool Planet has made school planning tolerable… I might even go so far as to say enjoyable!!

Instead of taking hours, each subject takes only minutes to put together.

Some other great features

Aside from school work I also keep a running (printable!!) grocery list for THREE different stores and daily Bible verse widgets on my homepage. Other widgets include to-do lists, weather, daily quote, a messenger (to message other members of the family via text or email) and more.

If a subject is missed or forgotten about by a student, it pops up when you log in the next day. Like everything else in Homeschool Planet, you have several options to choose from.

You may notice that the Bible assignment says Oscar & Julia. You can schedule subjects or classes for multiple students, which again saves time.

You can also create transcripts. Hello high school!

We used the program on computers, laptops, tablets and phones. I LOVE that it is available on all of our devices. Homeschool Planet is hands down the best homeschool planner ever. The customization availability is out of this world.

You can sign up for a free 30 -day trial (NO credit card required) and if you decide to keep the program ($65/year or $6.95/month), all your information is kept for you so you don’t have to redo anything!!

I look forward using the planner throughout the next year. Did I mention that the kids really like it too? My planning has always been with pen and paper but Homeschool Planet has changed that… permanently!!

  1. Thank you for writing this! I was googling how to use Ambleside with Homeschool Planet and it brought up your post. I love your idea of listing the individual books as subjects. Why didn’t I think of that? That’s a great idea.
