Anatomy & Physiology for Elementary Students with Apologia

We received the Exploring Creation with Human Anatomy and Physiology set from Apologia for review. You might think, “Anatomy and Physiology in elementary grades???” YES! Apologia has created a wonderful program perfect for children kindergarten through sixth grade (or 5 to 12-year-olds.)

Anatomy & Physiology for Elementary Students

For the past few weeks, Max and Caroline (my first graders) have been learning all about human anatomy and physiology.

The set we received includes:

  • Exploring Creation with Human Anatomy and Physiology Text

  • Exploring Creation with Human Anatomy and Physiology Junior Notebooking Journal

  • Exploring Creation with Human Anatomy and Physiology Notebooking Journal

  • Exploring Creation with Human Anatomy and Physiology MP3 Audio CD

I also purchased an extra Junior Notebooking Junior (so both kids could do it) and the experiment kit to make things easier on myself. I don’t know about you, but I tend to not do the science experiments (no matter what curriculum we are using) if I’m not prepared ahead.

The kit has pretty much everything we will need for the many experiments, separated in individual bags by lesson. It doesn’t get any easier than that!

What’s the difference between the Notebooking Journals?

The Notebooking Journal, meant for third graders and up, contains a variety of activities including full-color mini-books, additional fun experiments, crosswords, and supplementary materials. This journal is recommended for students who have mastered handwriting and can take notes.

The Junior Notebooking Journal, meant for kindergarten to second/third grades, includes the same mini-books and covers the same topics, but activities that require more writing have been replaced with coloring pages. The junior journal is perfect for the beginning writer or children who are not yet writing well.

Both of the Journals are spiral bound and filled with fun age-appropriate activities. In the front of both journals is a suggested schedule to make the program last a full school year. However, for our family, that schedule is too intensive. We are pretty much going at half the recommended pace. If your students are older, I bet Apologia’s schedule would work fine for you, but my first graders can only pay attention for so long.

That being said, since getting this set, science has become their favorite subject. We do our science during our afternoon table time (when baby brother is in bed) and it’s become their favorite part of the day.  They anticipate the experiments and fun journal pages. I’m so glad I bought the extra Journal so they could do it together.

We’ve also picked up some fun supplemental materials like this huge puzzle I found at the IAHE convention. The kids have all become interested in the human body!

Exploring Creation with Human Anatomy and Physiology Text

The text is typical textbook size and hardback. Its content is divided into 14 Lessons, with each lesson being between 20 and 30 pages in length. You cover everything from the body systems (nervous, digestive, respiratory, muscular . . . ) to health and nutrition and growth and development.

Throughout the lessons, you’ll find natural stopping places where you take time for the children to narrate.

Jeannie Fulbright has done an excellent job of taking complex terms and concepts and making them understandable for children. I read aloud from the text while the kids play or do pages in their Journals.

Sometimes I have to do something else when it’s time for science so I just grab our MP3 Audio CD and have it do the reading for me. It’s perfect for students who are not reading on their own yet, or for the entire family to enjoy together. This CD contains a complete audio recording of the course.

Experiments!

We videoed the apple mummifying experiment. Check them out below!!

We had so much fun!

Here’s a photo of the apple results.

We are all loving the Anatomy and Physiology curriculum and will be finishing it. I think after this we’ll do Apologia’s Botany.
