Damp is one of the worst home problems you can get but most people will have to deal with it at some point in their lives. If you let it get out of control, it can be incredibly expensive to get rid of and it’s a big health hazard.
Having lots of black mold in the house can cause some serious respiratory problems so you can’t let it go unchecked. You can get damp proof paint which helps a little and you can always clean it off but you’re never going to get on top of the problem unless you deal with the underlying cause.
If you’ve got a damp problem that just won’t go away, it could be caused by one of these things.
A leaking roof is one of the most common causes of damp problems in the home and they can easily spiral out of control. When you’ve got water leaking in through the roof, it’ll get into walls all over the house and start causing damp all over the place. If you’re getting a lot of damp, you need to get a roofing company to come in and have a look for you.
If there is a leak, they might be able to make small repairs on the roof and plug the gap. But sometimes, the damage is extensive and you’ll have to get a whole new roof put on if you want to avoid damp again in the future. Once the roof is repaired, you can get somebody in to help you dry out the walls and clean off all of the mold to make sure it doesn’t come back again.
If you’re getting damp in the bathroom or in the kitchen, it might be because of bad ventilation. When you have a shower or boil water, you’ll get a lot of steam. If that steam doesn’t have anywhere to go it’ll stick to the walls and they’ll get damp, eventually becoming moldy.
Damp proof paint can help but ideally, you need better ventilation. Try to keep a window open where you can and consider getting a dehumidifier to put on while you’re showering or cooking and you’ll be able to avoid any damp problems. You should also wipe down the walls to get rid of any condensation on there.
In an older house, you’re far more likely to have problems with leaking pipes that will cause water damage and problems with mold. If you think that you might have a problem with leaking pipes, you should call in a plumber and get them to have a look. Don’t wait until a pipe bursts before replacing it because it’ll cost you more money. You’re better off replacing old, worn out pipes before they become a problem.
Always be on the lookout for these common causes of damp problems around the home. If you don’t stay on top of it, it can cause a lot of damage to the home as well as your health.
